A relative latecomer to AFLW, Harriet Cordner brings a unique sporting background to the elite level, having been an accomplished junior soccer player before transitioning to football. She was initially selected as a rookie by the Melbourne Football Club, where she spent four seasons developing her craft as a defender. During her time at the Dees, Harriet built a reputation for her ability to both nullify key opposition forwards and launch attacking play with her composure and intercept marking.

After four enjoyable seasons at Melbourne, Harriet moved to Richmond, where she quickly became a pillar of the Tigers’ defence. Her aerial prowess and consistency were recognised in a standout season, earning selection in the All Australian Squad of 40 and finishing third in Richmond’s Best & Fairest. Following a strong pre-season in 2022, Harriet started the year in excellent form before suffering a season-ending ACL injury. She attacked her rehabilitation with determination and returned in 2023, showcasing her resilience and professionalism.

Ahead of the 2023 season, Harriet made the move to Carlton, embracing a new challenge and becoming a key figure in the Blues’ backline. In 2024, she enjoyed a consistent campaign, playing every game and establishing herself as a reliable defensive anchor through her intercept work, leadership and strong one-on-one defence.

Harriet elevated her performances again in 2025, delivering one of her best seasons to date. Her influence across the back half was rewarded with a second-place finish in Carlton’s Best & Fairest, underlining her importance to the team’s structure and success.

With her elite reading of the play, aerial strength and competitive edge, Harriet Cordner continues to stand out as one of the AFLW’s premier key defenders.
